Happy New Year! As we step into 2025, I wish to take a moment to acknowledge your remarkable resilience! Living with fibromyalgia isn’t easy, and starting a new year can bring both hope and dread. This year, why not join me as we focus on empowering ourselves to rise above the disbelief and negativity that too often come our way—whether from friends, family, or even our healthcare team. In this blog, I’ll share heartfelt advice to help you start the new year on the right foot, so you can navigate these situations, while building a circle of support that truly understands and uplifts you.
Let’s Start with Knowledge
One of the best ways to feel confident in the face of doubt is to educate yourself about fibromyalgia. When you understand your condition and can explain it to others, you become a stronger advocate for yourself. Share credible resources with loved ones who may be open to learning, but remember, it’s not your job to convince everyone.
Protect Your Energy
Not everyone will understand your journey, and that’s okay. What matters most is how you care for yourself. What you are living is very real, so you can remind yourself of this whenever needed. Set boundaries with people who drain you, and don’t be afraid to step away from conversations that feel invalidating. You deserve relationships that lift you up, not wear you down.
Find Your People
Having a support system makes all the difference, especially when you're actively working on improving your symptoms! Whether it’s through local meetups or online groups, connecting with others who truly "get it" can be life-changing. Look for communities full of people who’ve walked similar paths, are further ahead on their journey to recovery, have positive advice to share, and can offer both empathy and encouragement. But also, why not consider branching out into communities with whom you share common interests, maybe a hobby you enjoy now or have enjoyed in the past and could go back to now, or something that might help you explore new interests and talents in ways unrelated to your fibromyalgia. I believe we enrich our lives and start to feel whole again, when we do not let our health challenges solely define who we are in the world. After all, we are greater than our challenges, are we not?
Be Kind to Yourself
Disbelief and gaslighting can take a serious toll on our emotions. That’s why self-compassion is so important. I actually believe self-compassion is the first step to reaching remission with fibromyalgia. It was for me, and I see it happen all the time with my own clients! Taking time for mindfulness, journaling, or whatever helps you process your feelings is a powerful way to help refill your emotional and physical energy tank. Celebrate your small wins—like getting through a tough day or learning a new fibromyalgia management tool—because every step forward matters. Become your own best friend! Most of us simply don’t know how to do this. We weren’t raised to prioritize it, and it’s certainly not something they teach us in school. This is why when coaching my clients, I start with supporting them to learn what compassionate self-care looks and feels like in their own lives. If there’s one relationship that’s crucial to nurture on your journey to feeling better, it’s the one you have with yourself!
Advocate for Yourself with Confidence
When faced with skepticism, try to stay calm and centered. Use "I" statements to express your needs and feelings, like, "I need understanding and patience as I manage my condition" or "it hurts me and our relationship when you choose to ignore my energy limits." With your healthcare team, you can share credible resources and websites so they can expand their knowledge of fibromyalgia. And if someone refuses to listen, remember—their disbelief can't and doesn’t define your reality.
Let’s Work Together
You don’t have to navigate fibromyalgia alone. As a coach, I’m on your side, here to help you reclaim your power, learn new fibromyalgia improvement tools, set healthy boundaries, and create a life filled with support and possibility.
